Sub-Zero EE: what it means and what to do

The short answer

EE is a temperature sensor error: the control is reading one or more temperatures incorrectly. Most refrigerators keep cooling with EE showing, but a wine cooler will shut down.

EE (the service indicator will also be flashing) is a temperature sensor error. The electronic control has detected that it is reading one or more of the temperatures incorrectly.

EE is not a user-repairable error. The good news is that most units can tolerate an EE and still continue to cool. The exception is a wine cooler: wine coolers will shut down.

What to do if EE is displayed

  1. Clean the condenser, especially if a second code, EC 40 or EC 50, is also showing.
  2. Monitor the fridge and freezer temperatures.
  3. If the condenser is clean and temperatures are at or close to normal, turn the power off to the unit, wait a minute, and restore power.
  4. If EE comes back, contact your factory-certified servicer for diagnosis.
